Gateway National Recreation Area offers 26,000 acres with a variety of activities for nature and culture enthusiasts.

 Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: hiking, birdwatching, ecology workshops, camping and picnicking

 

 Floyd Bennett Field: historic NYC airport that was home to 26 world record flights around the world. Home to model airplane flying, horseback riding, rock climbing, year round skating and more.

 

 Fort Tilden: historic army base and home to Rockaway Theater Company and Rockaway Artists Alliance

Jacob Riis Park: named after activist journalist and reformer, author of the book "How the Other Half Lives" the park is a true "people's beach" with its famous Riis Beach Bazaar, Golf and American Princess Cruises offering historic and nature cruises around NYC Harbor. 

Canarsie Pier: excellent fishing site and launch for canoe and kayaks.

Rockaway Beach: premier beach for NYC surfing and paddle boarding

Marine Park: home to a small boat marina and  superb public golf course
